Sponsorship OpportunitiesClick here for the downloadable sponsorship form Did you know that San Diego Gas and Electric, whose parent company is Sempra Utilities, owns and operates a liquid natural gas-fueled electric generating plant in Baja California? To transport this foreign-produced power to various locations throughout Southern California, Nevada and Arizona, SDG&E/Sempra has petitioned the State of California’s Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for authorization to construct 150 miles of high tension power lines and massive sub-stations (referred to as the Sunrise Power Link) through several state and federal park lands, wilderness areas, private properties and established communities. Very little – if any – locally-produced renewable power will be entered onto this proposed grid. As energy brokers, Sempra has designed a massive system to increase their corporate profits, with total disregard for state and federal mandates to reduce our reliance on foreign fuels, to increase our generation of local, clean electricity and to encourage the development of renewable sources. This proposed above-ground, 150 high lines also increases the already extreme hazard of wild fires in our rugged and pristine back county areas. Many independent studies have revealed that SDG&E’s projections of congestion, shortages and savings are totally inaccurate and misleading, making this invasion of public and private lands unnecessary. Their initial efforts to convince our state’s Public Utilities Commission has met with vigorous opposition from numerous local community groups. With the outcome of their petition uncertain, SDG&E/Sempra has taken their appeal to the federal government, enticing the Department of Energy to designate a huge swath of Southern California a National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor, thus assuring the building of the Sunrise Powerlink. Although none of these corridors have yet been completely defined, the DOE has obligingly begun an investigation of their request. With the potential acquiescence of this governing body, the citizens of the impacted communities have banded together to fight this blatant manipulation. We have raised over $500,000 under the Protect Our Communities Fund, administered by the San Diego Foundation. We know that this sum is not enough to combat the anticipated legal and political battles that SDG&E/Sempra will probably launch in order to prevail. To raise awareness of this situation and to increase our war chest, this coalition of community action committees has planned a fund raising event. We’ve chosen a rock concert venue, to be held on privately-owned property in the small desert community of Ranchita in the San Diego back country, one of the heaviest hit areas under SDG&E’s proposal. Your sponsorship of this event will greatly increase participation and monetary support. We need your help! Your appearance and leadership of this effort will ensure our success. Our success will encourage other grass roots organizations to step to the forefront so we can win the war against global warming. Thank you! Contact
